Born 28 April 1948 – Terry Pratchett

Sir Terence David John Pratchett, a titan of fantasy literature and master of witty satire, was born on April 28, 1948, in Beaconsfield, England. His life, spanning nearly seven decades, was a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring appeal of humour. Though details of his childhood are not widely known, his early interest in science fiction and fantasy blossomed into a prolific writing career.

Pratchett’s most celebrated works are undoubtedly his Discworld novels. This sprawling comic fantasy series, set on a flat world literally balanced on the back of a giant turtle, captivated readers worldwide. With over 40 novels in the series, Pratchett satirized everything from mythology and fairytales to politics and social issues, all with a healthy dose of wit and sharp social commentary. His memorable characters, from the luggage-toting Death to the inept wizard Rincewind, resonated deeply with readers of all ages.

Beyond the Discworld, Pratchett penned numerous other novels, children’s books, and screenplays. He garnered numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Carnegie Medal and a knighthood for services to literature. However, his greatest reward was undoubtedly the devoted fanbase he cultivated. Pratchett’s works, filled with humour, humanity, and a touch of the fantastical, continue to bring joy and laughter to readers around the globe. Sadly, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Sir Terry Pratchett passed away on March 12, 2015, near Salisbury, England. Yet, his legacy as a literary giant and a weaver of fantastical tales lives on.
