Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron, was born into Prussian nobility in what is now Poland on May 2, 1892. Though he initially followed his family’s military tradition by joining the cavalry, his true calling emerged with the dawn of aerial warfare in World War I. Taking to the skies, he quickly established himself as a skilled and courageous fighter pilot, amassing an unmatched record of 80 aerial victories by April 1918. Tragically, his life was cut short later that same month when he was shot down and killed near Amiens, France. Despite fighting for the opposing side, the Red Baron earned respect from his enemies for his chivalry and flying prowess, solidifying his place as a legend of aviation history.
